Male sculptures, favourite of De Mérode

The Museo Archeologico in Venice has a collection sculptures on display from Greek, Greek-Roman and Roman origine. A large part of the collection was gathered by the family Grimani in the 16th century.

Willem de Mérode was a great fan of sculptures. His poems show his love for male busts and torso’s. I can only suspect De Mérode must have admired the beautiful and extensive collection of Grimani on one of his trips to Venice. Unfortunately I cannot reconstruct this. Anyway, he took home a bust of Antinous during his Italy-trip and he wrote a poem (Dutch) about Antinous.

As for me, the poem ‘Het museum (Brussel II) illustrates strikingly how he admired scultures.

HET MUSEUM

Ik ging de blijde beelden langs, de ranke
Marmeren knapen glanzende van leven
Met stil lachende lippen, leenge flanken,

Die ‘t driftig sidderen in trager beven
Verrillen lieten, tippend op de teenen,
Heupwiegend op een hooggewreefde voet,
Op ronden knie gebogen, met een gloed

Aandachtig schreed ik langs de donkre bronzen,
De werkers, waarin ‘t leven zwaar gaat gonzen,
Met armen stoer van onbewuste kracht,
De kerels met de taaie kabelpezen,
Iets van een hond en roofdier in hun wezen,
Hartstochtelijke trouw en wilde macht.

The Museo Archeologico is a part of the Correr museum with the Bibliotheca Marciana, the Libreria Sansoviana en the Museo del risorgimento. With one ticket you get admittance to an enormous collections of materials that illustrate the history of Venice.
