Usually visitors enter Venice at the Piazzale Roma. At the ACTV-ticketoffice in the square you can buy your travel card or season ticket for the vaporetto, the Venetian equivalent for a bus.
ACTV offers several options. Choices vary from a one-way-ticket to a season ticket for 72 hours. So, these tickets have temporary validity only. The ticket for 72 hours in its ordinary version costs around 35 euro. You are able to travel three days with it. However, you could also consider buying a real season ticket, which is definately a good option if you plan to stay longer in Venice. Will you be in Venice for over six days, you should choose the residence card. In proportion to the 2 or 3 short stay tickets for three days this version is a lot cheaper.
This is how it works: go to the back of the ticket box with the queue; you cannot buy the card at the desk for the short stay tickets. Here you buy a resident card which consists of two parts: the basic card of 50 euro which is valid for 5 years, and the season ticket of your choice (around 20 euro a month for all vaporetto lines of ACTV). Don’t mind the strange look on the face of the person serving you at the counter, fill out the papers, get your picture taken, pay and you’re done.

Compare:
– 2 x 35 euro = 70 euro = 2 x 72 uur = six days travel
– 1 x 50 euro + 1 x 20 euro = 70 euro = a month travel (+ the basic card that is valid for 5 years with which you can buy a cheap season ticket)
Another advantage: you can ride the traghetto for 70 eurocents instead of paying the 2 euro the ordinary tourist has to pay.
As of March 2012 you have to check in by swaying your card at a check-in machine every time you hop on the vaporetto (not sure if they also want you to check out ..).
