In November 2012 Venice had to deal with an exceptionally high waterlevel. The water got as high as 160 cm, with the result Venice was flooded for 70%. The cause of this was a high tide in combination with severe rain. A large part in the north of Italy had to deal with constant floods due to lasting rains.

The water level in Venice reached the highest level since the end of the seventies, however the record height of the aqua alta of 1966 (194 cm) was not matched, fortunately. Of course a water level like this has its impact, however life in the city goes on as usual. I embedded two videos that show beautifully of life in Venice during periods with high water. One video dates back to 2008, the other is of the recent flooding in November. More information about acqua alta in Venice can be found at veniceforyou.com.
